Western/allopathic and Eastern/holistic medicine view illness and health in different ways.
The Western/allopathic medicine idea of illness is based upon the germ theory. Illness is something that comes from germs that invade the body and causes it to become sick. Strong pharmaceuticals are prescribed and surgery can be performed to confront the illness. Symptoms can be temporarily eliminated but once the pharmaceuticals are removed, the illness eventually returns. Western/allopathic medicine views health as the absence of disease. Because patients are categorized as sick/not sick, subtle symptoms such as dry skin, low energy, digestive and respiratory issues may be dismissed because these symptoms have not manifested into a defined disease state.
The Eastern and Holistic Healing Arts like homeopathy, naturopathy and chiropractic, sees illness as a result of an imbalance and communication breakdown in the body. This imbalance may be due to a variety of factors including poor diet or a diet of nutrient sterile foods, overwork, stress, hereditary factors or emotional issues. Illness is the manifestation of imbalances that lowers our resistance to germs. To Eastern and other holistic healing arts, health is a result of a dynamic balance that is unique to that person. Our bodies hold within them all they need to fight off virtually any germ as long as we maintain this balance with a nourishing diet, exercise, adequate sleep and a healthy attitude. Subtle symptoms could suggest a low-grade chronic condition or the beginnings of something more serious.
